Stainless, carbon and tool steels all mark cleanly. Titanium takes colour from the same pulse-tuned process we use on coins. Damascus we will discuss first — the pattern and the mark compete for the same surface, and the result depends on the billet.
If you are stamping your mark, you already know the compromises. Strike a hardened blade and you risk it. Strike it soft and you are marking before heat treat, which means a ruined blade takes the mark with it.
The laser works cold on a completed, hardened, finished blade. Nothing to reharden, nothing to refinish.
A stamp wanders with hand pressure. A fixture and a file do not. Blade forty looks like blade one.
A custom stamp is a few hundred dollars and one design forever. Change your mark, add a date code, run a one-off commemorative — it is a different file, not a different tool.
